Hello and a very warm welcome to my (new) website. This is very much a work in progress, so please bear with me as I build this up!
I am currently Professor of Social Science and Public Policy at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
My research focuses on the interplay between population and policy - especially in Asia. The main question I ask in my work is 'how do changing demographic circumstances shape and affect policies, and vice versa?' My work is especially focussed on the transition to low fertility rates, and population ageing and slow/negative growth.
I am profoundly committed to transdisciplinary work and, as such, have a number of projects working with colleagues in electrical engineering, life science, psychology, marketing, economics, and so on.
I am also the Founding Director of the HKUST Center for Aging Science. Supported by over USD3.2 million of funding, this transdisciplinary centre sets out to transform the way we think about, and respond to, individual and societal processes of aging.
I strongly believe that our research must be grounded in the real-world needs of humanity. I have been fortunate enough to win an ESRC Celebrating Impact Award for my work on population projections. My research has also been the subject of an Impact Case Study as part of the most recent Hong Kong Research Assessment Exercise.
I am always happy to contribute to evidence-based policy development. I have worked with the United Nations Population Fund on various aspects of population policy development; the Asian Development Bank, as well as a number of commercial organisations.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for any questions about my work!
